Wherefore I take you to record
this day, that I am pure from the blood of all men. For I have not
shunned to declare unto you the whole counsel of God. (Acts 20: 26-27)
Paul declared the
“whole counsel of God” to the church at Ephesus. It was that complete
teaching of God’s will unto them that allows him to claim innocence
concerning the fate of these brethren in the future. He exhorts the
Ephesian elders to use this complete teaching to guide them in
shepherding the flock in Ephesus. Unfortunately, it seems that by the
end of the first century, the church at Ephesus is rapidly falling away
from the faith. (Rev 2: 1-5). This was despite the fact that they were
armed with the “whole counsel of God”. I wonder how they would have
fared had they not been so well equipped. It just doesn’t seem as
though they would have been better off with less knowledge of God’s
word.
Now consider this.
It took Paul 3 years, warning them night and day with tears, to declare
unto them “the whole counsel of God”. (Acts 20: 31) At 30 minutes a
week, how long do you think it would take for you to hear the “whole
counsel of God” from your preacher. If the only exposure that you have
to God’s word is that Sunday morning sermon, then you’re not getting as
much of God’s word as you need. That’s like trying to do war with the
devil without taking any weapons. (Eph 6: 11-17) Understanding God’s
will takes a lot more than 30 minutes a week.
It seems that this
might be a good time to remind you all that we have Bible study at 9:00
am on Sunday and at 7:00 pm on Wednesday. There’s another sermon at
5:00 pm on Sundays. At Primetime Monday (6:00 pm) there is always
opportunity to ask Bible questions in an informal atmosphere. And your
preacher is always available for home Bible study. Just let Jack know.
